The mural took me
six months to paint. It was funded by Donald Penny,
the M. Biddle Duke Foundation and the Durham Arts
Council as a gift to the city. The Caktus Group
which has bought the building and is restoring it to
its original 1910 look has painted over the work.
The 40' high x 144' wide mural represented 800
species of native flora and fauna; Margaret Nygard,
the Eno River State Park's founding force, rested in
the painting on a bluff. George Pyne gave me the
long list of plants to include, and River Dave and
Hildegard Ryles, among many others, helped
immeasurably with the project.
